HIV Prevention with PrEP

What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is medication that can help prevent HIV infection.

PrEP is highly effective.  When taken as prescribed, it can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by up to 99%.

PrEP is available in several forms, including daily oral medications and long-acting injectable options.  Regardless of the form used, PrEP can help prevent HIV infection if a person is exposed to the virus while taking the medication as prescribed.

Your healthcare provider can help you determine which PrEP option is right for you.

Getting Started With PrEP

PrEP is for people who do not have HIV but may be exposed to the virus through sex or injection drug use.

PrEP services are available through the UToledo Health Care Clinic.

Before starting PrEP, you will need an HIV test and a healthcare evaluation.  Ongoing follow-up and HIV testing are also needed while using PrEP.

It is important to note that PrEP does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or pregnancy.
