Living Donation
At any given time, nearly 100,000 Americans are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, but only about 27,000 kidney transplants are performed in the U.S. each year.
Living kidney donation can help close this gap, giving more patients access to the life-saving care they need.

Why consider living donation?
Living donor kidneys are considered the gold standard for kidney transplants. Compared to deceased donor kidneys, they often begin working more quickly and may continue to function longer. Living donation may also increase the likelihood of finding a better match for the recipient, which can reduce the risk of rejection after transplant.
Procedures also can be scheduled in advance - sometimes before a patient even needs to begin dialysis.
UToledo Health is proud to help facilitate living kidney donation.
Living donor criteria
Potential donors undergo a rigorous evaluation of their overall mental and physical health to ensure their ability to safely donate a kidney.
You may be eligible to donate if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have a BMI of less than 35
- Are in good mental and physical health
- Have no history of heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease or diabetes
