Breast Cancer Radiation Treatment
For many patients diagnosed with breast cancer, radiation treatment is an integral part of the multidisciplinary care plan.
Radiation treatment is a crucial component of a “breast conservation approach,” which allows the breast to be spared while delivering equivalent cancer control to mastectomy. In high-risk breast cancer patients who receive mastectomy, radiation treatment following surgery decreases the risk of recurrence and has been shown to improve overall survival.
Traditionally, whole breast radiation for breast conservation has been delivered using “conventional fractionation,” in which daily treatments are typically given over 6 weeks.
Leading Technology. Exemplary Care.
At UTMC, we have extensive experience treating breast cancer patients with shorter radiation treatment regimens (3-4 weeks total). This shortened treatment course is just as effective and obviously more convenient. This regimen is endorsed by the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
Additionally, we are excited to offer accelerated, partial breast irradiation (APBI) to all eligible patients. APBI targets the lumpectomy cavity alone, and allows a patient to complete radiation treatment in 10 sessions, delivered twice daily over 5 consecutive days.
