Lung Cancer Radiation Treatment
At the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center, radiation treatment is a key part of our multidisciplinary approach to treating lung cancer. Along with surgery and systemic therapy (chemotherapy and targeted agents), radiation treatment helps to improve the chance of tumor control and cure.
Leading Technology. Exemplary Care.
At UTMC, we use only the most advanced technologies for treating lung cancer, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and stereotactic body radiation treatment (SBRT). We use 4D CT simulation to precisely track and account for respiratory motion of tumors during treatment. All of these approaches allow us to effectively target the cancers and minimize the radiation dose received by the normal lungs, heart, spinal cord, esophagus and other critical normal structures.
Our faculty is highly skilled in using SBRT in treating early stage primary lung cancers. SBRT has been shown to offer a 97 percent three year tumor control rate for early stage inoperable primary lung cancer.
One Team
At UTMC, we take a team approach, with the knowledge that the best treatment plan involves an integrated approach using the experience and skills of specialists across the medical care spectrum. Our radiation oncologists collaborate with specialists in medical oncology, surgery, integrative care, pain management, physical therapy and nutrition. Your team of cancer specialists is all under one roof at the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center. Our team of cancer specialists meets each week to discuss each cancer case, and creates the most effective and efficient multidisciplinary care plan.
