Integrated Behavioral Health Care
Be your best self with comprehensive treatment of physical and emotional challenges.
At The University of Toledo Medical Center Family Medicine, we offer a comprehensive approach to your physical and mental wellness when habits, behaviors, stress, worry or emotional concerns interfere with your health, happiness and well-being.
What is integrated behavioral health care?
Through integrated behavioral health care, you’ll have access to a behavioral health provider (BHP) to discuss any physical health frustrations, emotional concerns and behavioral distress. Your BHP will be either a psychologist or a social worker with specialty training that will help you better understand your difficulties and develop solutions.
You also can expect your BHP to have a close working relationship with your primary care provider (PCP). Your care team will share information to develop a treatment plan that addresses your physical and mental health to provide the highest quality of care.
We treat our patients using a collaborative care model. This team-based approach allows us to become more familiar with and better address your health-care needs.

Why would my provider suggest integrated behavioral health care?
Behavioral health providers can help improve functioning and allow you to better cope with chronic medical conditions such as depression, anxiety, headaches, diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension, pain and irritable bowel syndrome, among others.
One of our specialists also can help you develop plans for changing behaviors, such as quitting smoking, losing weight, stopping or decreasing alcohol intake, increasing physical activity and other lifestyle changes.
You can trust our providers to help you with emotional and behavioral problems, such as family or relationship difficulties, parenting concerns, excess stress, sleep problems, loss and grief, depression, anxiety and anger problems.

Who else will be on my health-care team?
You or your PCP might also decide to include family members, trusted friends or other health-care professionals to your team. A psychiatric consultant also may be involved, serving as an expert consultant to your BHP and PCP. Our team psychiatrist also is available to advise, should your care team require assistance with diagnosis or treatment options.
If you need services outside of what our BHPs offer, we will assist you in finding additional providers.
What is my role?
You are the most important person on your health-care team. With your active participation, our providers can properly assess your conflicts and issues and suggest the best course of action.
If you have any questions or concerns about your care, please let your PCP or BHP know. Also, if you currently take any medications, please continue to follow the prescribed dose and let your health-care team know.
Are these services confidential?
Your BHP is required to observe the same patient privacy regulations as your PCP. Your medical visits and telephone calls will be documented in your electronic medical record.
Exceptions for maintaining confidentiality include the following:
- potential harm to self or others
- suspected child abuse or neglect
- adult abuse or exploitation
- abuse or neglect involving developmentally
- disabled individuals
- instances when the court system may order
- the release of records
How does this fit into my health-care plan?
Integrated health-care services are billed separately from your medical appointment and are covered by many insurances. However, if one of our medical learners provides your care, there is no cost to you.
