Pancreas Transplant Criteria
The UToledo Health transplant team developed the following criteria as a screening tool for determining a potential transplant candidate. This is not all-inclusive and the final decision will be determined by the transplant surgeon.
Indications for Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney Transplant
- End-stage renal disease or chronic kidney disease with a glomerular filtration rate less than 20 ml/minute
- Type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes.
Indications for Pancreas Alone Transplant
- Type 1 diabetes, insulin-dependent Type 3c diabetes, or diabetes after partial or total pancreatomy
- End-organ damage or hypoglycemic unawareness.
- Individuals who have undergone a prior kidney transplant and have Type 1 diabetes may also be eligible for a pancreas alone transplant.
Other General Criteria
- Body Mass Index of less than 35
- Less than 60 years old at time of listing
- No symptomatic peripheral vascular disease, severe coronary artery disease or uncorrectable coagulation abnormality
- No active or ongoing cancers
- No active infections
- No smoking
- No use/abuse of illegal substances
- No alcohol abuse
- Documented compliance with treatment modalities
