Driving Evaluations & Training
The University of Toledo Medical Center is one of just two facilities in northwest Ohio to offer this unique program to assess and train elderly drivers or drivers with disabilities and other impairments.
Our certified driver rehabilitation specialist offers a comprehensive clinical, simulation, and on-the-road assessment to individuals with physical, cognitive or vision impairments. Driving training is also available in a modified vehicle with adaptive devices or techniques for patients who wish to return to driving after an injury or illness, or who require adaptive equipment to drive.
Physicians may refer the following patients to the program:
- Older drivers, including those with cognitive changes, Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease
- Drivers with acquired disabilities including physical, cognitive, or visual impairments or the effects of stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, psychological impairments and other conditions
- Novice drivers or pre-driving assessments with diagnoses such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorder or learning disabilities
To begin the process, you will need:
- A physician's referral for occupational therapy. All pertinent diagnosis and contact information should be faxed to our office at 419.383.3184. We will contact you to schedule an appointment.
- A valid driver's license or permit is required for any on-road portion of the program.
What to expect on your first visit
UTMC’s driving training therapist will:
- Review the patient’s medical history.
- Conduct an assessment of visual and perceptual skills, reaction time, cognition and transfer skills.
- Assess basic driving knowledge, adaptive equipment needs and behind-the-wheel skills.
The University of Toledo Driving Program is licensed by the Ohio Department of Public Safety as a Class D, Disability Driver Training School.
