Male Infertility

Male infertility is the sole or contributing cause in nearly half of infertility cases. At The University of Toledo Physicians Male Sexual and Reproductive Health and Urology Center, we understand that not being able to conceive a child can be stressful and frustrating for couples.

The combined expertise of our board-certified urologist and andrologist, who specialize in male reproductive health, can determine the most appropriate treatments to address underlying health issues. Treatments range from simple, office-based interventions to more advanced surgical procedures. All are performed locally so there is no need to travel outside northwest Ohio.

Diagnosing Male Infertility

Infertility is defined as a couple’s inability to conceive a child after one year of unprotected intercourse. Our experts in male fertility offer new hope to help you achieve your dreams of parenthood. It is a common problem that approximately 15 percent of all married couples experience. In nearly half of these couples, male infertility is the sole or contributing cause. Since male infertility is more common than initially thought, it is recommended that both male and female partners be evaluated.

The most common causes of male infertility directly or indirectly impact sperm quality. These conditions include poor sperm motility, poor shapes or low quantity – such as complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate. Semen analysis is an easy test that is commonly used for detecting sperm-related problems. The results can indicate whether a male factor that can cause infertility is present.

Semen Analysis

Semen analysis is the most common method of detecting sperm-related problems. The results of this simple test, which is performed at our on-site andrology for optimal results, can pinpoint male infertility problems. Our laboratory is certified by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

Sperm Retrieval Services

In some patients who have very low or no sperm in the ejaculated semen, sperms can still be retrieved using advanced techniques, such as MESA, PESA, TESE, Micro TESE and EEJ.

Low Testosterone Men’s Health Clinic

Testosterone is an important hormone responsible not only for fertility and sexual health, but also for overall muscle, bone and mental health. “Low T” can cause fatigue, depression and impotence. Our Men’s Health Clinic is the region’s only multi-specialty clinic that addresses and treats these problems. Our team includes an endocrinologist (hormone specialist), a nutritionist and a urologist. We are uniquely suited to address even the most complicated hormonal issues in men.
