What is PrEP?
Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a way for people at risk of HIV infection to greatly reduce their risk. It’s a pill called Truvada that, when taken daily as directed along with condom use, can reduce risk of HIV infection by up to 92%.

How much will I have to pay for PrEP?
PrEP patients are responsible for working with their insurance companies to determine if PrEP is covered under their plan. The maker of Truvada, Gilead, also has patient assistance programs available for PrEP patients—call Gilead at 1-855-330-5479 for more information.

What is PEP?
PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, involves taking anti-retroviral medications immediately after exposure to HIV to reduce risk of transmission. Due to the immediate need for dispensing as soon as possible after exposure, those seeking PEP should head to their nearest emergency department to obtain treatment (ideally four hours or less after exposure, but no more than 72 hours).
