Advanced Heart Failure Clinic

While a diagnosis of heart failure can be frightening, our team of specialists is here to help you manage this common disease and improve your health and quality of life.

Patients in the Advanced Heart Failure Clinic at the University of Toledo Medical Center can expect personalized care and access to the latest diagnostic tests and treatments available. Our program brings together experts specializing in cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac intervention and cardiac imaging to offer you the comprehensive care needed to best manage your health.

UTMC’s Heart Failure Program has earned advanced certification from The Joint Commission and The American Heart and Stroke Association for quality care and patient outcomes. This certification recognizes hospitals that help heart patients recover quicker and reduce the likelihood of hospital re-admission.

UTMC is also proud to be recognized with the American Heart Association's 2020 Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Honor Roll Gold Plus achievement award, an in-hospital program for improving care by promoting consistent adherence to the latest scientific treatment guidelines.

New Therapies

Heart failure cannot be cured, but with the right treatments, patients can slow progression of the condition and preserve their ability to live a more active lifestyle.

UTMC is proud to be the first hospital in the region to offer an innovative new therapy called cardiac contractility modulation (CCM). The Optimizer Implant is the first and only FDA-approved device in the United States for the delivery of CCM therapy. Similar in size to a pacemaker, the Optimizer is implanted through a minimally invasive procedure and sends precisely timed electrical pulses intended to improve the heart’s ability to contract and send oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. This treatment can:

  • Improve quality of life so people with heart failure can get back to doing the activities they love
  • Work more effectively than medications alone, because medications aren’t always enough to manage symptoms
  • Strengthen a patient’s heart, because it is designed to improve contraction of the heart

This therapy is covered by Medicare and is increasingly covered by commercial insurers.

We invite you to call 419.383.3963 to schedule an appointment with one of our advanced heart failure specialists to discuss CCM therapy and other treatments available to help you manage this condition.
